Belfast-based start-up Nuada builds filtration machines that seize carbon dioxide from industrial off-gases, enabling emitters in heavy trade sectors to scale back their carbon footprint.
It’s now working with the International Cement & Concrete Affiliation (GCCA), and particularly Holcim, SCG, Cementos Argos and Cementos Molins.
The GCCA’s 2050 Internet Zero Concrete Roadmap reckons that carbon seize might obtain greater than a 3rd of all of the emission reductions wanted in cement manufacturing, however the excessive capital price of apparatus and the vitality depth of obtainable options make the economics “difficult”.
Jose Casaban, co-chief govt of Nuada, stated: “Carbon seize represents the biggest price component within the CCUS [carbon capture utilisation and storage] worth chain. Innovation in carbon seize is significant to slashing the price of seize, enabling the ramp-up of infrastructure and finally bettering the economics of CCS tasks. Nuada redefines carbon seize by deploying an answer that addresses the fee, vitality, and integrational challenges for harder-to-abate sectors like cement.”
The cement producers will work with Nuada to guage its next-generation carbon seize know-how as an answer to provide low-carbon cement. The brand new partnerships have been facilitated via the International Cement and Concrete Affiliation (GCCA), complementing present collaborations with Buzzi Unicem, Cementir Holding, and Heidelberg Supplies, established via the Innovandi Open Problem programme. This programme brings start-ups and main cement corporations collectively to work on web zero initiatives.
“The dedication of those main cement gamers to collaborate with Nuada, attests to the potential of our carbon seize innovation as a cornerstone resolution for low-carbon cement, and we eagerly anticipate working collectively to speed up its deployment,” stated Conor Hamill, Nuada’s different co-chief govt.
Holcim’s head of analysis & growth, Edelio Bermejo, stated: “We’re more than happy to hitch the consortium via the Innovandi Open Problem programme. Carbon seize is a key lever to speed up our decarbonisation journey, and with CCUS tasks all over the world and a dedication to speculate CHF 2 billion (£1.8bn) by 2030, we’re main our trade’s transition to a net-zero future. Partnering with Nuada will facilitate the testing and speed up the deployment of their know-how, finally supporting the scaling up of carbon seize efforts. We look ahead to continued innovation and collaboration throughout the trade in direction of the purpose of a net-zero future.”
Cementos Argos future tech chief Daniel Duque stated: “GCCA Innovandi Open Problem is an amazing initiative the place cement gamers collaborate with revolutionary corporations which are growing the applied sciences and enterprise fashions of a low CO2 building trade. Nuada know-how is a really attention-grabbing proposal with nice potential.”
